FAQ - What to find here
We have plenty of information awaiting to be accessed by you. To keep our
site clean and straight forward we decided to use this section to deal with
typical frequently asked questions (FAQ) as well as with various
additional in-depth explanations
(appendix). To simplify the navigation as well as the search for certain content we decided not to put this information into a database but to use a simple text page that can be accessed by search robots.
To structure our information we decided to split it into the two sections
FAQs and Appendix. All entries are sorted chronologically
(latest at the top) and end with a two letter signature of the person who
wrote the respective entry as well as its publishing date. If you want more
information on any entry please use the e-mail address that is incorporated
in the persons’ signature.
FAQ
Q: Where does the name Cubidor derive from? What is its meaning?
A: Cubidor is an artificial name that combines the word cubus
(Latin for cube) and d’or
(French for made of gold). Both elements derive directly from heraldry. In heraldry the cube (as well as the snake)
symbolizes knowledge. Due to the negative meaning the snake possesses in
some cultures the cube was chosen. ms, 15.7.2007
Q: Why does Cubidor uses an old-fashioned style/design?
A: The selection of the design is the result of very conscious reflections about image and emotional transfer. As
nowadays most of the educational organizations use modern symbolic and design elements to transfer their state
-of-the-art attitude the founder wanted to contrast this trend by going back to the roots of universities in the
medieval ages. Thus, the whole symbolic and color concept is based on heraldry.
Q: What is taken from heraldry?
A: Heraldry
is a movement that emerged coincidentally with the appearance of armors in medieval times. The
protective covering for the body using metal plates brought about that warriors where not able to distinguish
between friend and foe on the battlefields.
This very disadvantageous effect was overcome by using symbols and colors attached to the armors - the birth of
coat of arms
. To reflect the social rank of a person or family heraldry established a strict and very precise
system of symbols and colors and their combinations to reflect the bearers strengths and attitude.
At Cubidor University Switzerland we thought that a heraldic design approach is appropriate to clearly
distinguish ourselves from other universities and to contrast our extremely modern approach in methodology
and technology with a classic and completely non technical design.
